THE LIGHTING INDUSTRY HAS CHANGED DRAMATICALLY SINCE ITS INCEPTION MORE THAN A CENTURY AGO. LUMINAIRE DESIGN HAS BEEN DRIVEN LARGELY BY THE EVOLUTION OF LIGHT SOURCES, BEGINNING WITH THE FIRST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE INCANDESCENT LAMP THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WHITE LED. THE EVOLUTION OF THESE SOURCES BEING A RESPONSE TO MARKET DEMANDS AND FUNCTIONAL SHORTCOMINGS. THIS PRESENTATION WILL ADDRESS THE EVOLUTION OF ELECTRICAL LIGHT SOURCES AND HOW THIS HAS LED US TO THE LIGHTING PRODUCTS THAT WE HAVE TODAY. DIFFERENT LIGHT SOURCES WILL BE COMPARED FROM BOTH AESTHETIC AND FUNCTIONAL PERSPECTIVES, AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR OPERATION WILL BE ADDRESSED.

Ike Flory received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. He has over 17 years of experience in the lighting industry, serving in several positions as an employee of Hubbell Lighting Incorporated including Manager of Electrical Engineering and Intellectual Property Coordinator. He has been awarded 25 United States Patents and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is currently an Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Engineering Technology Department at Old Dominion University where he teaches courses energy systems, electrical theory, and technical analysis. Dr. Flory performs research in the areas of energy conversion, energy conservation, alternative energy, and engineering education.

The Illuminating Engineering Society’s Annual Conference August 8-10, 2019 in Louisville, Kentucky provides a range of educational programming—including workshops, seminars, immersive experiences, tours, networking, and paper and poster presentations—on the art, design, science, and research of lighting relevant to lighting professionals, educators, and related design disciplines. As always, professional education is paramount, with a broad selection of CEU credits available through participation at the conference.
The 2019 Annual Conference will endeavor to bring experiences, education, networking and inspiration together to foster personal and career growth.
